Amazon Prime Video India has signed an exclusive deal with Tamil actor and producer Suriya’s 2D Entertainment, through which the production house’s next four movies will premiere directly on Prime Video worldwide.

Founded by Suriya, one of the Tamil film industry’s biggest stars, 2D Entertainment has produced films such as Soorarai Pottru, which was intended for theatrical release, but premiered on Amazon Prime last year when the Covid-19 pandemic shuttered India’s cinemas.

The four titles included in the new deal are expected to premiere on Amazon Prime over the next four months. They include:

  • Jai Bhim (pictured, November 2021) – directed by T.J. Gnanavel, a murder mystery about a tribal couple and the lawyer who takes on their case when the husband goes missing from a police station.
  • Udanpirappe (October 2021) – directed by Era Saravanan, a family drama about two siblings who are separated due to their different beliefs in the concept of justice.
  • Oh My Dog (December 2021) – directed by Sarov Shanmugam, a childrens’ film revolving around the friendship between a pup that has escaped being put down and a little boy who is not popular or a good student.
  • Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum (September 2021) – directed by Arisil Moorthy, a comedy drama about a village that becomes famous on national TV news, although the villagers don’t have electricity to watch television.

Vijay Subramaniam, Amazon Prime Video India director and head of content, said: “At Prime Video, we have one of the largest libraries of Tamil movies in the country. This association comes on the back of the incredible love that 2D Entertainment’s Soorarai Pottru and Ponmangal Vandhal received from audiences worldwide.

Subramaniam added that Indian regional-language movies streamed on Prime are recording 50% of viewership from outside their home state, while international audiences are accounting for 20% of viewership.

2D founder Suriya said: “The past year has been transformative. Given unprecedented circumstances, we innovated on different models of release. Amazon emerged as the chosen streaming service for 2D’s latest film launches. From Ponmangal Vandhal to Soorarai Pottru, these beautiful tales found audiences and resonance not just in India, but across the world.”
