Astro teams with Globe to launch Tribe in the Philippines

Malaysia’s Astro Holdings has entered into an agreement with mobile operator Globe Telecom to launch its OTT service Tribe in the Philippines.

The two companies said the agreement also reflects an intention to collaborate on “content opportunities that will be distributed on Tribe and other platforms across the region”.

Astro recently launched Tribe in Indonesia, offering live and on-demand content such as live sports and Asian films and TV series, including popular Korean entertainment.

Astro COO Henry Tan said: “Recognising the importance of local and differentiated content, Tribe and Globe look forward to more discussions on the collaboration of content tailored to the Filipino audience, for distribution on Tribe and other available platforms. Additionally, Tribe welcomes participation from content creators and producers in the Philippines and across the region.”

Tan also explained that, in an attempt to differentiate itself from other OTT players, Tribe focuses on building communities of fans who are highly and socially engaged with each other around the content they consume.

Albert de Larrazabal, Globe Telecom chief commercial officer, said that the telco has built a “strong portfolio of content based on the interests of our customers” over the past three years, and that the partnership with Astro would help bolster that offering.

Globe plans to make Tribe available via mobile or home broadband plan bundles, with consumers able to use Google Chromecast to stream to TVs.
