Hulu Japan to produce Japanese series Daisho

Hulu Japan is producing original Japanese series Daisho (Compensation), starring Shun Oguri and Tsutomu Takahashi.

The six-part drama will revolve around the relationship between a lawyer (Shun Oguri) and a psychopathic client (Tsutomu Takahashi) who were previously childhood friends.

Based on the novel of the same name by Jun Ioka, the series will be directed by Yosuke Goto and Shosuke Murakami. It will be available to Hulu subscribers in both Japan and the US this autumn.

Daisho is a story with the sort of subject matter that could never be shown in a network drama. Made in the form of a continuing drama, it uses six hours to get to the bottom of its characters’ lives,” Shun Oguri said in a statement.

Hulu Japan is owned by broadcaster Nippon Television (NTV), which bought out the service from its US owners (Disney, Fox and NBCUniversal) in early 2014.

Amazon and Netflix are also producing Japanese-language series. Netflix recently streamed a critically-acclaimed adaptation of Naoki Matayoshi’s novel Hibana, while Amazon has announced a slate of Japanese originals, including Kamen Rider Amazons, Happy Marriage and Crayon Shin-chan: Alien vs. Shinnosuke.
