MUBI enters theatrical distribution with Baden Baden
Streaming platform MUBI is entering theatrical distribution in North America with the release of Baden Baden, directed by Belgian filmmaker Rachel Lang.
Lang’s feature debut, the film stars Salomé Richard as an independent and free-spirited young woman returning to Strasbourg for the summer after a period living overseas. It follows two short films which develops the character played by Richard: For You I Will Fight, which won a Silver Leopard at Locarno film festival, and White Turnips Make It Hard To Sleep.
Baden Baden opens on November 25 in New York at the Anthology Film Archives and in Los Angeles at the Arena Cinelounge Hollywood, followed by an exclusive digital release on MUBI. The film received its world premiere in the Forum section of this year’s Berlin Film Festival.
MUBI has previously theatrically released two titles in the UK – Miguel Gomes’ Arabian Nights in April 2016, following its Cannes premiere in May 2015, and Mathieu Amalric’s The Blue Room in September.
Last year, MUBI launched Paul Thomas Anderson’s Junun as a global exclusive following its premiere at the 53rd New York Film Festival.
The company is also planning UK theatrical releases for Berlinale Panorama opener I, Olga Hepnarova, Eugène Green’s The Son Of Joseph and Bruno Dumont’s Cannes Palme d’Or nominee Slack Bay, as well as both a US and UK theatrical release for Un Certain Regard winner and official Finnish Oscar entry The Happiest Day In The Life Of Olli Mäki, by Juho Kuosmanen.
In 2016, the platform’s streaming exclusives include a one-year retrospective dedicated to the work of acclaimed Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz.
