Netflix to expand in Europe

Netflix has confirmed plans to expand into six European territories later this year, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Luxembourg.

The internet television giant said it would disclose details of pricing, programming and supported devices at a later date. The planned European expansion follows the launch of Netflix in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden in 2012 and the Netherlands in 2013.

Netflix currently has more than 48 million subscribers in around 40 countries, of which 35 million are living in the US.

Netflix also recently announced that it will produce its first Spanish-language original series, a comedy from Mexican director Gaz Alazraki. The project reunites the team behind We Are The Nobles (Nosotros Los Nobles), one of the biggest Mexican box office hits of all time.

Produced by Alazraki Entertainment, the 13-episode series is set to premiere in 2015 and centres on a family feud among heirs of a soccer club after the owner’s death. The series will shoot entirely in Mexico and feature a cast from all over Latin America, including Nobles star Luis Gerardo Mendez.
